Not Your Chair

24 Hour POE

Principles of Engineering (POE) is a class in which students design and build a full electromechanical system over the course of eight weeks. A tradition for the teaching assistants of the course is to attempt to complete an entire project in 24 hours.

Not Your Chair is a chair that moves away from you as you attempt to sit in it. To compliment the ridiculousness of the project, we decided to outfit our chair with two electric scooter motors that could be independently driven. I was in charge of putting together the powertrain, which involved turning a few free wheelbarrow wheels into driven wheels. During the 24 hours, I machined the wheels, corresponding hubs, and brackets to hold everything on. Tremendously, 23 hours after we began, it worked!
