As a two week project in our Principals of Engineering class, my team mate and I constructed a prototype 3D scanner that rotates an infrared sensor around an object that is placed in the center. As we were given no materials except two servos and an infrared sensor, the rotating arm and main structure were made out of scrap materials. There were several issues along the way, including wire wrapping and the non-continuous nature of our servos, but we were able to solve all of them and create some decent quality scans. In addition to creating the mechanical structure, we also wrote software to interpret and plot the data from the infrared sensor.
